Trading Out Fear, the Corporate “F-word”

The Two Fuels: Trust and Fear

Every leader—every person—is fueled by something.

We may not always recognize it, but underneath the surface of our interactions, decisions, and relationships lies a driving force. And most often, it boils down to one of two powerful fuels: trust or fear.

Stephen M. R. Covey once said,

“Trust is the glue of life. It’s the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It’s the foundational principle that holds all relationships.”
(The Speed of Trust)

In contrast, Robert Sherer warns:

“Fear is the greatest energy drain in your organization.”
(Fear: The Corporate ‘F’ Word)

Both fuels can move people—but only one leads to flourishing.

Fear Works… Until It Doesn’t

Fear can produce short-term results: compliance, fast action, or even what appears to be high performance. But over time, it corrodes relationships, suffocates creativity, and creates brittle teams where people hold back instead of stepping forward.

When fear fuels our leadership, we unintentionally communicate:

These messages—whether spoken or implied—lead to missed opportunities for trust, connection, and team health. People may follow, but they won’t flourish.

High-Centered on Fear

Living or leading from fear is like getting a vehicle high-centered on a rock. The wheels spin, but we’re stuck. Forward progress feels impossible.

When we’re motivated by personal fear, we often experience:

These are signs of deeper stories at work—past trauma, painful failure, or a fragile sense of identity. The result? We hide. We posture. We hustle. Or we swing between the fear-driven extremes of fight or flight.

Choosing a Better Fuel

Trust-based leadership flows from a very different well.

It’s rooted in security—in knowing who we are and whose we are. It comes from the settled confidence that we are deeply loved by God and accepted by others, not because we’re perfect, but because we are known and valued.

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear…”
—1 John 4:18

“So do not fear, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
—Isaiah 41:10

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
—Galatians 5:1

When we’re fueled by trust:

Trust doesn’t eliminate difficulty. But it creates a safe foundation for growth—in us, in our teams, and in those we love and lead.

The Invitation

So here’s the question worth asking:

What’s fueling your leadership right now?
