The Big Idea:
With the NFL and NCAA kicking off this fall, leadership lessons are on display every weekend. Fans love the deep passes and highlight reels. But coaches know – games are often won in the trenches—by blocking and tackling.
Life and leadership are no different. Some leaders thrive on disciplined fundamentals. Others lean into bold expansion. The healthiest organizations need both. And we need both in our daily lives!
The Two Orientations Leaders May Display:
1. Blocking and Tackling Leaders — masters of the essentials:
- Purpose: clarity of direction and disciplined focus.
- Planning: consistent processes, reporting, and cost analysis.
- Presence: investing in the home team—developing staff, caring for customers, valuing vendors.
2. Airing It Out Leaders — champions of growth and expansion: - Vision casting.
- Exploring new markets.
- Driving revenues and business development.
- Focus on relationships with new customers.
The Tension
These two leadership instincts can easily clash. Risk-takers may view fundamentals-focused leaders as boring or overly cautious. Process-driven leaders may see risk-takers as arrogant or blind to consequences. But pit one against the other, and both the leader and the organization suffer!
The Genius of the “AND”
Jim Collins, in Built to Last, called it “the tyranny of the OR” vs. “the genius of the AND.” The companies that endured for generations refused false choices. They embraced disciplined fundamentals and bold expansion—valuing both blue sky pursuits and foundational processes.
A Biblical Perspective
The apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 12 about different gifts in the body: “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.” Some leaders are integrators—disciplined, steady, grounded in process. Others are visionaries—big-picture, risk-taking, inventive. Both matter!
Proverbs echoes this truth: “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice” (Prov. 12:15). Wisdom comes when leaders embrace counsel and a balanced approach.
The Necessary Balance
-
Vision without fundamentals is fragile. You can’t throw the long ball if your line can’t protect the quarterback.
-
Fundamentals without vision stagnate. Blocking and tackling alone may prevent disaster, but it won’t advance the ball.
Enduring leaders commit to both – ensuring the basics and embracing bold plays.
!!! These principles are true in our everyday lives as well! If we don’t take care of our day to day, ordinary tasks, the vision won’t be fulfilled. AND, if we are only focused on the must-do, daily tasks, we might miss the expansive opportunities God has for us.
Questions for Reflection:
- Where do I naturally lean: fundamentals or bold expansion?
- Who on my team brings the complementary gift I lack?
- Are we living in the “genius of the AND”—or stuck in the “tyranny of the OR”?
- How does this principle apply to how I’m living in my personal life?
Conclusion:
Leadership, like football, isn’t won by long passes or by grinding fundamentals alone. The teams and leaders that endure know the secret: blocking and tackling and airing it out.
